The Learning Wheel, a tool for personal and organizational transformation.

”- Around 1990, I began looking for other ways of thinking. We were so linear in terms of strategy and processes, that my understanding was that people are afraid of change. So, I started thinking about the question: Is there a place in the world where there are people or cultures that do not fear but, in fact, embrace change and see it as a way of life? I found the North American Indians’ learning wheel: the Medicine Wheel, which is based on the notion that everything goes in cycles. Things are constantly changing, and it is all about having a dynamic balance. Dynamic balance is the movement that creates balance – Göran Gennvi”.

The learning wheel teaches us that the four elements, each so distinctive and powerful, are all parts of the physical world. All must be respected equally for their gift of life. The learning wheel teaches us that we have four aspects to our nature: the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual. Each of these aspects must be equally developed in a healthy, well-balanced individual throught the development and use of volition (will).

The ancient symbol of the learning wheel is a mirror which reflects not only what a person is, but also what they might become through the development of their potentialities. But it can also be used för the transformations in organisations in the same way.

The Management Wheel
Vision guides by the Soul, Mission (or business idea) guides by the heart, Strategy guides by the intellect, recourses gudes by the ”bank” and everything circles aroud the core values.

The Learning Wheel
In 1997 the merger of the five Learning Disciplines and the medicine wheel was presented to Peter Senge, the founder of Organizational Learning at MIT. He liked the idea a lot. Within Naturakademin Learning Lab we have used this combined concept ever since.
